Cancun – After three days at Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf and Spa Resort, I surprisingly needed some time to spend with my daughter. But I wasn’t going to have it at the hotel.

My wife and I had hoped that Dream Playa Mujeres (pronounced Muheres) would provide enough distractions that we could spend a few hours a day away from the kids. But all day, every day?

Since our arrival, my eight year old daughter, Maya, had chosen to spend her time at the kids club. So I knew I would have to take her out of the compound to get her attention.

When we were planning the trip, we thought spending alone time was wishful thinking, especially when Maya asked, “Do we have to go to vacation jail?” When I asked her what that meant, she replied in a matter-of-fact tone, with airy quotes, “kids club.” I promised her that if she didn’t want to go to the kids club, she didn’t have to. My wife who was seated across from us got wide-eyed and gave me the “what are you saying – of course she has to go” look.

The deal I made with my daughter was that she would have in and out privileges, meaning she could come and go from the kids club, whenever she felt like it. (We invited a playmate so our six-year-old had someone to play with.)

No “holiday prison”.

When I checked in on Maya the first morning, I expected to see her soon. The staff said they would walk her to the beach, where I intended to fall and flop.

An hour later she was no longer in sight and I asked the waiter at the beach to bring another Corona and a strawberry daiquiri for my wife. It wasn’t until noon that we started wondering if they could find us. My wife had me checked.

The note on the locked door of the Explorer’s Club read: “I went to lunch at the World Café | International buffet. I went there and found Maya eating with a group of children and the instructors.

I approached her sheepishly – only for her to ask, “What are you doing here?” and “Can I stay?”

I almost ran to the beach, but on vacation the fastest I do is a brisk walk.

It’s the stuff that Dreams is made of

The Explorer’s Club is open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. – and yes, they do take the kids to dinner and an evening show if you wish.

Each day’s activities can be viewed on an iPad provided in the room. Daily activities range from face painting to zumba to tie-dye t-shirt making, crafts, video game tournaments, trampoline bungee jumping, movies, beach parties, and more. beach and visits to the water park and slides.

So maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised on the second day when Maya woke me up with, “I’m going to the kids’ club.”

And so my wife and I were free to enjoy the luxury of Dreams Mujeres. As our favorite guest, we had our run of the place, and that mostly meant lounging in one of three huge pools, our choice of 13 bars, or in a cabana at the beach.

We thought it was too bourgeois to call 24 hour room service as there was a restaurant a few steps from our elevator.

An 18 hole par 72 golf course designed by Greg Norman was not used by us.

The 16,000 sq.ft. the spa tempted us – and maybe we should have indulged, but frankly, the view of the beach from the cabana was enough for me. The white sand beach stretched for miles.

My wife enjoyed watching the parade of brides – there would be at least one wedding every day of our 7 day holiday.

Then a great desire set in: I missed Maya.

I checked in with her several times a day, but she was still having too much fun to leave. One time she checked herself out and they walked her to our spot on the beach, but she only stayed for an hour before saying she wanted to “come back for the next activity”.

Sunwing Experiences to the rescue

I had booked an excursion to Xel Ha through Sunwing Experiences, in an effort to give my wife some alone time, but now it was for dad daughter.

Xel Ha is a water playground, with crystal clear turquoise waters – from the top of the waterslide (40 meters high), we saw a meter long fish streak past a diver. The cove, which shares its waters with the Caribbean Sea, contains caves, mangroves, lush jungle and a river. The natural beauty of the park is mesmerizing.

All-inclusive activities include snorkeling, lazy river tubing, cenote exploration, ziplines, treetop biking, cliff diving, a children’s play area with treehouses, rope bridges and water slides. Plus, food, at three restaurants, and alcohol are included in the tour price.

Maya and I climbed the lighthouse waterslide, explored a Mayan exhibit, rested in the hammocks, cycled, and explored jungle trails before heading to a bar for pristine mojitos. The three of us stayed, long enough to talk about life, family, and the new friends she had made at the kids club.

It was a perfect day in paradise. And for one day, I had my daughter all to myself.

The next day she would be back at the Dreams’ Explorer Club (she even convinced her brother and his friend to go – they didn’t want to miss the fun), and my wife and I chose to rest easy in the one of the infinity pools.
