Golf Business News – Penha Longa is the first Portuguese golf resort to join the Women In Golf charter

Penha Longa Resort’s commitment to the R&A’s Women in Golf charter shows its commitment to developing the game of golf, with a current female staff representation of 48%, the resort is best placed to help develop the game of golf and maximizing the potential of women and girls in Portugal.

The station aims to provide introductions to golf as well as offer resort-wide initiatives to increase female representation. As part of this commitment and supporting the objectives of the charter, Penha Longa Resort will become one of more than 900 signatories, including national federations, golf clubs, professional tours and organizations.

The Women in Golf Charter was created in 2018 to encourage more women and girls to play and pursue a career in golf. Now, with its #FOREeveryone campaign, the R&A is calling on industry organizations to create a more inclusive culture that protects golf for future generations.

Penha Longa Resort has embarked on several projects under the Women in Golf Charter, including starting with the facilities at the resort and looking to build on what they currently offer female members and guests. In addition, the station hopes to increase its female workforce by 135 people in key areas such as the operations department and the grounds maintenance team.

Golf-specific commitments will also be introduced to increase female membership to achieve a balanced image of all genders and ages, as well as further investment in women and girls who hope to grow and compete in golf, with the aim of enabling golf to be played at a professional or international level.

Speaking about the Women in Golf Charter, Oliver Key, General Manager of Penha Longa Resort, said: When the Women in Golf charter was offered to us, we knew it was something we needed to be part of and an area we wanted to develop at Penha Longa Resort. We are continually looking for ways to grow our golf offering and our commitment to the charter further cements it, as we seek to fulfill it through a number of events and projects that we will implement in the months ahead. Whether it’s encouraging representation for the whole family through our annual events or enhancing our women’s golf collection in the pro-shop, we believe that what we put in place will help grow the game of golf in Portugal for girls and women.

Penha Longa Resort held several engaging events including an introduction to golf, Learn to Love Golf Clinic, on the 22n/a May. The clinic will take place over an hour and will be exclusively reserved for women and young girls, offering them an introduction to golf, followed by a group lesson on the driving range. With the recent introduction of their new professional, Susana Mendes Ribeiro, the event will be an enjoyable experience for all women to try out a new sport with their friends and family.

The resort also announced the introduction of a ladies-only package, Mind, Body and Golf, which not only offers the opportunity to experience the golf on offer, but also the other amenities of the resort. The package includes 9 holes of golf on the famous monastery course, including a buggy, practice balls to warm up and a small Penha Longa gift to start the day. Lunch is included at Arola, where the dining experience is influenced by a creative blend of Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, followed by a visit to the spa where you can immerse yourself in a wellness getaway with an aromatic or therapeutic massage and take advantage of the other spa facilities. Priced at €190 per person, this full-day experience is available all summer at Penha Longa Resort.

The Women in Golf Charter demonstrates the intention of the golf industry to come together to achieve greater gender balance and improve the way women and girls experience golf, while challenging some of the dominant stereotypes.

Being the first signatory in Portugal demonstrates Penha Longa Resort’s passion and commitment to the game of golf and that individuals can thrive within the industry and the wider Portuguese population.
