Jharkhand MP: Golf resort near Raipur turns into fortress as Jharkhand MPs check in

Far from the bustling crowds of the city of Raipur, the Mayfair Golf Resort where MPs from the ruling UPA coalition in Jharkhand are sequestered has turned into a fortress with police personnel deployed everywhere.

The JMM-Congress-RJD coalition in Jharkhand flew its 32 MPs to Raipur on Tuesday to prevent the BJP’s alleged attempts to poach its lawmakers.

The MPs, 15 from Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and 17 from Congress, accompanied by Chhattisgarh Congress Leaders Ramgopal Agrawal and Girish Dewangan traveled in three buses to the luxurious resort located in Nava Raipur.

As journalists camp out in the area in the scorching heat in their quest for information and visuals, their entry is strictly prohibited inside. The resort’s roughly 40 rooms have been reserved for Jharkhand guests for the next two days, Congress sources said.

A video of an SUV with ‘Chhattisgarh government on duty’ written on it and carrying liquor bottles allegedly to the station went viral during the day, with the opposition BJP slamming the Congress government in the state at this topic.

“Chhattisgarh is not a den of delicacies where alcohol and chicken are served to MPs in Jharkhand with the money of the people of Chhattisgarh. After Assam and Haryana, MPs from Jharkhand are stationed here. Chhattisgarh Mahtari (Mother Chhattisgarh) will never forgive you for this immoral act,” BJP Vice Chairman and former Chief Minister Raman Singh tweeted in Hindi.

Singh also posted the video.

State Congress communications wing chief Sushil Anand Shukla questioned the authenticity of the video and said his party or the government had nothing to do with it. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren did not accompany the UPA MPs to Raipur, but some senior JMM leaders are with them, local Congress sources said.

The Mayfair Golf Resort rate was not available online, but the adjacent Mayfair Lake resort is offering a discounted room from Rs 4,200 per day, an employee of a nearby hotel said. The sprawling golf resort spans 100 acres of land, he added. Earlier in June this year, amid cross-voting fears in the June 10 Rajya Sabha polls, Haryana’s main opposition congress moved its MPs to the same compound.

Previously, candidates from the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), an ally of the Congress-led Grand Alliance in last year’s Assam Assembly elections, were brought to Raipur in April 2021 ahead of the counting of candidates. votes and stationed in the same premises. The ruling UPA coalition has 49 MPs in the Jharkhand Assembly which has 81 members.

Soren’s JMM believes the BJP may make a serious attempt to poach MPs from him and Congress in a bid to overthrow the government.

Following a BJP petition calling for Soren’s disqualification from the Assembly in a profiteering case, the Electoral Commission sent its decision to state Governor Ramesh Bais on August 25. Although the EC’s decision is yet to be made public, there was buzz that the polling committee had recommended the chief minister’s disqualification as an MP.
