There are goldfish that were buried with more apparent solemnity than poor Ivana Trump received, some critics say.
President Donald Trump’s first wife in office, she was laid to rest in an obscure plot near the first hole of his golf course at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey on July 20.
To some observers, that seemed worse than sending his last remains to a potter’s field. For them, it amounted to the ultimate insult of a last act that had already seen an excess of it.
Ivana last made headlines when she enraged Trump’s third wife, Melania, by referring to herself in a 2017 interview as Trump’s first lady, receiving a sharp rebuke from Melania’s furious team at the White House.
The former president announced his passing on his much-maligned Truth Social platform saying, “I am deeply saddened to inform all who loved him, many of whom, that Ivana Trump passed away at her home in New York,” he wrote.

The distancing language was unequivocal, as Trump visibly excluded himself from the list of “people who loved him.” But the final resting place he chose for her says even more.
As a tax researcher, I was skeptical of rumors that Trump buried his ex-wife in that sad little patch of dirt at his golf course in Bedminster, NJ, just for tax breaks.
So I checked the NJ tax code and folks…it’s a tax avoidance trifecta. Property, income and sales taxes all eliminated. pic.twitter.com/VDZBlDyuhQ

I don’t know why this story isn’t discussed more. That seems to say a lot about the opinion Trump has for the people closest to him, so it’s worth paying attention to.
Some reports have tried to sweeten the bitter taste by insisting that the former president had ambitious plans for a family plot at the New Jersey Golf Course, one of his favorites, but the lonely grave of his first wife, from whom he was estranged, denies this claim.
There she rests, looking like a cruel afterthought, in an austere grave that ultimately provides her second husband with a handy trifecta of tax relief. Apparently, due to its odd placement, ownership, income, and sales tax for the station are now all eliminated.
Under the New Jersey State Tax Code, any land dedicated for cemetery purposes is exempt from all taxes, duties and assessments. In other words, the presence of human remains at the site would allow a series of convenient tax breaks to kick in, with one corpse on site enough to wipe out at least three forms of tax.
So never let say he couldn’t use his ex-wife I guess? But in this way? For this purpose?
How on earth could her three children, whom she apparently loved and who loved her back, allow their father to treat their mother like this? Burying him in little more than a pauper’s grave dishonors them all.
Since Trump himself hasn’t been his next of kin in decades, he couldn’t have decided his final resting place on his own. This would have involved his children and the executor of his estate. Clearly they all should have been okay with that.
The only thing planted in a Trump property was Ivana.

Trump believes taxes, like military service, are for suckers. But putting your so-called estranged first wife to work — in death — to solve a problem in life sounds awful.
And what scary thing does he say to his famous and powerful guests that his first wife is buried at the first hole of his favorite resort? As they put on their golf gloves, will they coldly think, “That too could be you?” Is this the kind of mafia game that is played to him? And will Trump start putting a different woman in different holes as their time comes?
Moreover, in this strange saga there are disconcerting notes. Ivana would have been cremated, so why – other than for tax breaks – place her ashes in a coffin and then bury them on the course?

Also ask yourself, would you do that? Bury your spouse – even if it’s the first – in a golf course? In a grave that has less apparent dignity than the average pet cemetery?
Life for all of us can be a difficult task and God knows a good round of golf can provide respite for many. But turning our hobbies into our final resting places is inexplicable at best and crass at worst – am I just going to play -and- visit mommy? So, two birds with one stone?
Poor Ivana probably deserved better, critics say. But she married who she married.
